Dragons battle Bobcats to open season at home

football

Members of the PHS football team’s kickoff teams practiced Monday afternoon as they prepare to go head to head against the Gilmer Bobcats this Friday night in Dragon Stadium.

This Friday will once again kick off football in Dragon Country as Pickens takes on their rivals to the north.

The team has fought through numerous regulations and delays brought on by the COVID-19 pandemic just to be able to suit up in 2020. According to Dragons Head Coach Jeff Nelson, “During these unprecedented times our coaches and players have worked very hard to prepare for the upcoming season and we are really looking forward to getting on the field this Friday night.”

The Dragons will have a lot of new faces on the field this Friday after graduating a large senior class in 2020. One familiar face for the Dragons will be Senior Sam Stout who helped anchor a solid offensive line for Pickens last season. At the wide receiver position, Seniors Mykel Hand and Clay Shoffer will look to stretch the field vertically against the Bobcats. The Dragons will return their leading rusher from last season as Jarod Whitmore will look to build on his 1,000 rushing yard season from a year ago. On defense, the Dragons will look to returning starters Sy Chadwick, Chase Nelson, and Andrew Burrell for leadership of this crew of fresh faces for Pickens.

The meeting between the two rivals will look slightly different this season as the Bobcats dropped to 3A after the region reclassifications last fall. Both teams will pad up for the very first time Friday night as both spring and fall scrimmages were shut down by the GHSA. Despite all of the setbacks that have faced both teams, the matchup will still contain all of the excitement of opening night in the biggest rivalry game of the season.
