When you walk into Rene’s Dominican Barber Shop, 938 West Church Street, your first thought might be, this can not be Jasper.
Painted in bright colors, with 10 barber chairs, mirrors lining the walls and two fast-moving Dominican barbers, it’s a barber shop like we have not seen before in this town.
When asked why Jasper, Rene Salvador, the owner, said he is asked that a lot and the answer is a combination of they felt this was a spot ripe for a family-owned barber shop that offers all styles of men’s haircuts and the fact that “Jasper is comfortable.”
“Jasper is a good place,” Salvador said. “The people are more nice than any other place I have been before.”
Before opening the shop on West Church Street, Salvador worked in barber shops in Gwinnett County. He has lived in the Atlanta area since 2012. He relocated to Ball Ground about two years ago.
Salvador said he brings a proud Dominican tradition of barbering to his work. “My whole life has been barbering,” he said. He trained in the Dominican Republic and has worked in the U.S. for barbers. He now has an apprentice, Leo Aulturo, also from the Dominican Republic, working for him.
His training gives him experience with all hair styles and he can do any type of cut from traditional to modern trends. He also offers straight razor trimming for beards and works with different beard styles. The day this reporter was there, a man was in one of the chairs with almost no hair on his head, but an impressive beard that Rene was working on.
When asked about his favorite kind of customer, he said he cuts hair from the elderly all the way down to kids and likes them all, but felt his patience with kids is his greatest strength as a barber. He said it can be tough to cut with a moving child, but he has the patience for the job.
Asked about his 10 chairs, Salvador said he hopes to expand with additional barbers in the near future.
Rene’s Dominican Barber Shop is open Monday through Saturday.
