The Pickens Progress will host a forum between commission chair candidates David Shouse (I) and Kris Stancil (R) on Monday, Oct. 5.
The event will be held at the Pickens County Administration Building, downstairs in the Pickens Room, beginning at 7 p.m. It will be moderated by longtime Progress contributor Larry Cavender, who has moderated numerous other political debates, forums, and town hall meetings.
Both candidates have agreed to attend. More details about the format and seating capacity will be provided soon.
Joeta Youngblood
Longtime educator Joeta Youngblood tendered her resignation from the Pickens school board on Monday, Aug. 31, citing a move to a different district.

The Pregnancy Center’s new location – a two-story, 12,000 square-foot-building on Caring Way - is strikingly different from their old space directly across East Church Street. Not only is the facility several times larger, it’s fully renovated, and was donated to the non-profit outright by the Hammill Family Foundation. The space will allow them to expand their offerings to the community.
“This is an absolute dream come true,” said Pregnancy Center Executive Director Pat Page at the ribbon cutting ceremony, Monday, Aug. 24. “When I met with the Hammills, they had plans I didn’t know about. They asked what we needed and I told them we were out of room. They said they wanted to help – at first I thought they might add a shed onto our old building, but they told me to dream big. It’s incredible, and we are giving all the glory to God.”

Last night, Tuesday, Aug. 25 just after 10 p.m., the Pickens Elections Office verified the needed 620 signatures for Independent candidate David Shouse to make November ballot. Shouse will run against Kris Stancil who won GOP primary. Shouse said he predicts he will win in a "landslide" victory.
Jasper fire crews extinguish flames from a car that crashed near the Hwy515/53 intersection Monday, after the driver fled from a Ga. State Trooper. The driver was charged with DUI among other offenses.
A Ga. State Patrol chase of a Canton man driving wildly on a crowded portion of Highway 515 Monday ended with the fleeing driver crashing into a stopped trailer at the Highway 53 intersection.
According to Ga. State Patrol reports, a trooper spotted the driver in a Ford Focus travelling at a high rate of speed and changing lanes recklessly with no signals.
