Jeep,
That is a load of crap!
Yes, I have a problem with teacher's pay. Teachers today are too busy "boo hooing" about their pay that they REFUSE TO TAKE CONTROL OF THEIR CLASSROOMS. In the real world, someone who gets paid more than $20,000 produces results or gets fired from the job! This is called professional motivation!
The studies you are talking about are mostly homeschooled I bet! Why? Because the schools are not teaching the kids anything.
You use the example of principles not disciplining the students. Unless it's a major offense, the teacher's should be able to handle it. If the principle is indeed not doing their job then file a complaint to have them removed... but then again we have been teaching our children for the last 25 years to "not make waves" and to be "a yes man/woman" (aka brown noser).
You ask if it is the teachers fault that parents don't make the students study. Yes it is. If parents knew their child would fail the class, they would demand their child do the homework. The problem with this is employers demand that the parents work any shift, any day, and they are not home to make them.
You say the class sizes are a factor. This is a load of crap. Like with any office job, they need to organize their time better and if need be take it home to do after hours like the homework the kids do. The class size has nothing to do with being unprepared. In fact why should a student be prepared if their teacher cannot be professional enough to be prepared for class? I have met several teachers that are uneducated in their field of study and unable to perform the classwork they were hired to teach!
In my day, if the students that did not study or do homework ended up as the janitor, sanitation worker, or they joined the armed forces.
And finally... back in the day a child would never have talked back to a teacher because the teacher HAD CONTROL OF THE CLASSROOM.
No, teachers are not rich but they make more per year than most of the present workforce! Try teaching for minimum wage... that's what most of the workforce is making right now.

Jeep,
You present a nice case but by checking the Bureau of Labor online I found that in GA teachers get between $47,000 and $100,000 depending on if they teach elementry through HS. The best salaries are... you guessed it... the administration, who by your example will not even discipline a child! Their job!!
For perspective, in GA:
EMT/Paramedics make an average of $31,580 / year Firefighters make an average of $35,180
Police/Sheriff Officers make an average of $39,370
Surveyors make an average of $45,000
I throw in the Surveyors because they are required to get a 4 year degree, take classes that are by far tougher than most classes a teacher ever takes, renew their license, and take refresher classes as technology changes.
By your post,I would assume you are saying that a teacher's job is so much harder than a police officer, fireman, or EMT.
To answer your question, since you evidently did not read my previous posts on the subject, I AM NOT A LIBERAL< SOCIALIST< COMMUNIST< GAY< LESBIAN< QUEER OR ANYTHING ELSE YOU MAY SUGGEST. I just know a load of crap when I see it.
For your own perspective: There where many people who never finished school, or went at all, that were taught by teachers without a college degree that are more intelligent than the ones today who have teachers with a Masters or Phd. That means the teachers are not teaching. Period.

In my day talking back to a teacher was a MAJOR offense!

Ellison.....EMT's, firefighters, and policeman are NOT required to get a minimum of a 4 year degree! Starting salary for teachers in Georgia is NOT $47,000. As for the $100,000 like you said administrators NOT teachers make this.
Here's another example, Georgia State Troopers receive 33 weeks of education and after 18 months on the job make $40,000 .
Back in your day when you rode a mule to school instead of a bus and were taught by someone without a degree you were NOT taught Calculus or Trig in high school. Advanced degrees are NEEDED to teach our children.
Is this really your best argument! SAD!

Curious,
I think you may need to read the GA Labor Laws.
According to the FLSA (DOL rev. July 2010) "FLSA does not limit the number of hours in a day or days in a week an employee may be required to work including Overtime hours" on employees over 16 years of age.
Child Labor Laws is the only law that restrict the hours/days worked are for those workers in high school and under 16 years old.
In fact, GA is an "at will" state and has no laws against employee "slavery" except the FLSA sections on requirement to pay, equal pay and minimum wage.

Ellison, you're an idiot. Pure and simple. You are the product of an era that survived because of personal responsibility, yet you ooze contempt for teachers while ignoring the problem with a generation of students who won't learn, don't care, whose parents gave up years ago while entrusting the raising of their children to complete strangers.
You are a complete and total enigma. Tell me, O Wise One, did YOU go to public schools? I'm quite sure you will defend your own education. Maybe you even agree that you get out of education is equal to the effort you put into it. Or do you think we just plug these young idiots into the Matrix and force knowledge into their subconsciousness's?
And for your damned info: the starting salary of a teacher is roughly $25-30K per year, depending on their level of education. Still think teachers make too much money? How about a teacher with two master's degrees earning $45K per year? Commensurate with the salary of your average plumber or electrician. If these salaries get much lower you will end up with teachers with GED's and a certification course teaching your grandchildren.
Or maybe that's your whole point: that's what you think is reasonable.

If a teacher has two master degrees and wants more money then they should teach at a college. Then again, if they taught at a college they would have to produce scholar level work.
BTW,The $50,000 salary was Jeep's example and I verified it through the Department of Labor and Bureau of Labor stat sheets. Oh, argumentative one, the amount is an average yearly salary and yes, it is based on education. The least qualified make the least salary.
The solution to the problem of slacker students is to weed them out so the real students can benefit from the resources the school has. Perhaps we can take the students that don't want to learn and teach them 8 hrs a day how to flip burgers, run a register, and be a drane on the system.
The thing is... teachers are getting paid to educate the students. If they refuse to learn, throw the students out of school. Let them see how hard it is to earn a living without the HS diploma. (that is if they don't start selling drugs) If we do this we will find an endless amount of fastfood employees and a better educational system with a surplus of funds.
In reality, we have students that are studying remedial level, the schools (who have the kids 8 hrs a day/ 5 days a week/ 9 months a year) are passing the blame to the parents (who employers require to work longer hours now), the parents look to the schools and finds the schools uncontrolled, undisiplined, and really a waste of money for not educating their children.
Bottom line is... if the parents are going to be the ones educating the kids, then why do we need teachers? If everyone homeschools their kids, then there will be no need for teachers. Teachers will be unemployed with two masters degrees and dreams of the good ole days.

Where have you heard that teachers demand more money? I'm speaking of our local teachers, by the way. Not the teachers union liberals. For the most part, our teachers are not screaming for more pay. They are under pressure from witch-hunters like you, though. You can't make them learn. Even if they manage to ride the pass-fail border for a few years, eventually an administrator will pass them up in many cases. It is a very simple mind that summarily blames the teacher for all it perceives is wrong. That bandwagon is full.
Nobody said parents should be educating their kids, but if they do-GOOD. maybe government should get out of the school business. It's just another social program anyway, but that's another discussion. Liberals have seen to it that generationally parents want their kids to be somebody else's problem. You can easily tell which kids in school have a strong family unit with good values. They typically are more successful and better adjusted.
In the entitlement age, thanks to liberal socialists like you, a single parent with no baby daddy gets paid for each child she pumps out and (usually) puts them under the care of other people ( schools) and there is simply no teaching them anything. People you have been voting for all of your life have created/fueled this problem- from the kids right to the schools. So of course all you can do is blame the teachers. Makes you feel less culpable.

Y'all are all wrong on the problem with education. The biggest failing the schools have is the idea that we need to teach the kids things we want them to know instead of things they already know. There needs to be a way for the uninspired, don't give a *&^% students to measure up. The misguided belief that you might somehow motivate cracks me up. Let's face it in this country for every George Washington and Obama, there is also a Thomas Coolidge (Calvin's brother) who just hung out at the White House and bet on ponies. These types also need help with their schooling so they can get through and out into the workplace. Because from what I've seen in the real world, people who clearly don't have a clue and don't give a flying rat's *&() dominate much of the workforce. The idea that students need to "achieve" is something we adults are imposing on them when many clearly want to slack.
Other thoughts on this.

They are expected to work when, where, and how the company tells them to. If they get injured... the company replaces them. If they ask for more than minimum wage... the company fires them. If they report dangerous conditions... you guessed it... they fire them.
Why should they be motivated? All the company will allow them to be is a grill clerk or cashier.

Most of the students today cannot go to college because they can't pass an entrance exam! WHY!! Because the teachers are not teaching the kids!
Say what you want but the teachers have control over them 8 hours a day, 5 days a week, 9 months of the year.
The students that do go to college most likely taught themselves!
I say lets get rid of the dead weight and get qualified teachers who can do more teaching and less worring about their $60,000 salary. During my years in school no teacher made that much money and they did more with an Associate Degree than the current taechers do with a Masters and PhD.

You're missing the point. The kids that go to college are those that either want to go and work at it or have parents that regiment them into wanting to go. The kids that fail to get into college need to babysat at high school until they can take up their slacker places working at chain restaurants or Walmart. As the great philosophical work CaddyShack argued, "the world needs ditchdiggers too." If the kids aren't worried about learning anything, then why should we worry about "learning them" as the ol timey folks used to say. In the real world do your respective bosses worry about your health and well being? Not to any serious degree. So let's let the kids get used to the real world in High School -- don't teach them anything they don't already know, it's comfortable that way.

Is it the teachers fault if she/he has a principal who refuses to discipline kids that are sent to them? Is it the teachers fault if a parent does not make their child study and do homework? Is it a teachers fault that class sizes have been increased and planning time has been cut?
"Back in the day" kids would never dream of talking back to a teacher or not doing homework because not only would the principal paddle them Mom would ground them. Your real problem seems to be with teacher pay! Teacher are not exactly rich.

1. Security. Unfortunately there are mentally unstable people in this world that take it very personal if someone has contradicting views.
2. They work in the schools/local government and posting under their real names would cause them to lose their jobs. Not a good idea in the current economy.
3. By being anonymous they can post what they truly feel without confining themselves to political correctness.
Now some reasons why posting anonymously can be a good thing.
1. It allows the rest of us to find out what's really going on.
One last thought for you, even if the poster puts a name like 'Brian Cain' on the post it really means diddly. Anyone can make up a name.

HEAVEN AND HELL
While walking down the street one day a Corrupt Senator was tragically hit by a car and died.
His soul arrives in heaven and is met by St. Peter at the entrance.
"Welcome to heaven," says St. Peter. "Before you settle in, it seems there is a problem. We seldom see a high official around these parts, you see, so we're not sure what to do with you."
"No problem, just let me in," says the Senator..
"Well, I'd like to, but I have orders from the higher ups. What we'll do is have you spend one day in hell and one in heaven. Then you can choose where to spend eternity."
"Really?, I've made up my mind. I want to be in heaven," says the Senator.
"I'm sorry, but we have our rules."
And with that, St. Peter escorts him to the elevator and he goes down, down, down to hell.
The doors open and he finds himself in the middle of a green golf course. In the distance is a clubhouse and standing in front of it are all his friends and other politicians who had worked with him.
Everyone is very happy and in evening dress. They run to greet him, shake his hand, and reminisce about the good times they had while getting rich at the expense of the people.
They played a friendly game of golf and then dine on lobster, caviar and the finest champagne.
Also present is the devil, who really is a very friendly guy who is having a good time dancing and telling jokes.
They are all having such a good time that before the Senator realizes it, it is time to go.
Everyone gives him a hearty farewell and waves while the elevator rises...
The elevator goes up, up, up and the door reopens in heaven where St. Peter is waiting for him, "Now it's time to visit heaven.."
So, 24 hours passed with the Senator joining a group of contented souls moving from cloud to cloud, playing the harp and singing. They have a good time and, before he realizes it, the 24 hours have gone by and St. Peter returns.
"Well, then, you've spent a day in hell and another in heaven. Now choose your eternity."
The Senator reflects for a minute, then he answers: "Well, I would never have said it before, I mean heaven has been delightful, but I think I would be better off in hell."
So St. Peter escorts him to the elevator and he goes down, down, down to hell..
Now the doors of the elevator open and he's in the middle of a barren land covered with waste and garbage. He sees all his friends, dressed in rags, picking up the trash and putting it in black bags as more trash falls from above.
The devil comes over to him and puts his arm around his shoulders.
"I don't understand," stammers the Senator. "Yesterday I was here and there was a golf course and clubhouse, and we ate lobster and caviar, drank champagne, and danced and had a great time. Now there's just a wasteland full of garbage and my friends look miserable. What happened?"
The devil smiles at him and says,
"Yesterday we were campaigning ... Today, you voted.."

Mr Mitton seems un-appreciated and angry in his letter to the editor.
I will agree with him that the credit goes to those that throw their hat in the arena. So to ALL the PARENTS that have done this - THANK YOU!
Now maybe Mr Mitton will understand those "ranting" parents that stood up and threw their hat in the arena. Maybe, just maybe he'll get it.
