Veteran’s Ride Crawl for a Cause this Saturday

Proceeds to benefit wife of deceased Pickens veteran

VetCrawl

A shot of last year’s Veteran’s Ride Crawl for a Cause, which raised nearly $3,700 for a local veteran in need. This year, the wife of recently deceased veteran Wayne Jewell has been selected to receive proceeds from the event to help with medical costs.

This weekend you can come out for a good time and support a good cause at the same time at the Veteran’s Ride Crawl for a Cause on Saturday, May 18.

Each year organizers select a different veteran to support with proceeds from the event. Jasper resident Wayne Jewell was originally selected as this year’s veteran, with proceeds to help Mr. Jewell and his wife Pat with medical costs associated with his failing kidney and need for a transplant -  but Jewell passed away before the event due to his medical condition.

Jewell was a Vietnam veteran who served from 1968 to 1972 in the Air Force. Exposure to Agent Orange was thought to be the cause of his kidney problems that eventually took his life.

“Now we stand with Pat because in this family nobody should have to fight alone,” said event organizer Amy Sassman.

All funds collected from the raffle, auction and decals will go to help Mrs. Jewell.

“She needs her community surrounding her now more than ever,” Sassman said. “Wayne gave the ultimate sacrifice for our country we love so much.”

Last year, nearly $3,700 was collected during the event for veteran Warren Boyette.

This year’s Veterans Ride Crawl for a Cause will be held at 5315 Off Road Park in Calhoun, Ga. The event begins at 9 a.m. Registration is $15 per person. Kids 12 and under are free.

Raffle donations include gifts from Tate Meat Market, Teraflex, Rough Country, Blue Line Woodworks, Torched Wood Works and more.
