Schools donate buses to Boys & Girls Club

Boys--Girls-Club-Bus

Pickens County’s Boys and Girls Club of North Georgia recently received much-needed transportation assistance when the local school system donated two decommissioned buses to the club. According to Director Michele Brackin, the buses will allow the club to bring kids from Pickens High, Jasper Elementary and Jasper Middle School. Previously, kids from the high school and Jasper Middle were not served by the club due to lack of transportation.

“Last year when we opened the club we were able to utilize MATS buses to bring children from Hill City and Jasper Elementary,” Brackin said. “The school system brought kids from Harmony Elementary because our club was within their home district and we walked kids over from Pickens County Middle School. Unfortunately, there was no service for JMS or Tate or the high school.”

Brackin said with the donated buses the club will bring kids from the high school, JES and JMS.

“We’re so thankful that the school system provided us these two buses,” Brackin said. “We’re extremely excited to be able to provide transportation services at our new Boys & Girls Club for youth from all of the schools.”

Brackin said her volunteer board is busy working on ways to fund the operation and maintenance of the buses, a $20,000 annual expense.

“We have a program called ‘Driving Great Futures Transportation’ where people can sponsor the program for a month of the school year. We’re asking local businesses to sponsor the club’s transportation for a month.”

A sponsorship is $1,000 and BGCNG is looking for five more sponsors for this school year.

In addition to financial sponsors, Brackin said she is currently seeking new two employees so she serve more kids.

“We have over 200 kids on the roster and we have about 150 coming each day,” she said. “Once we hire the two new staff members we’ll be serving nearly 200 kids a day.”

The mission of the Boys and Girls Club is to enable all young people, especially those who need them the most, to reach their full potential as productive, caring, responsible citizens. The club seeks to provide a world-class Club experience that assures success is within reach of every young person who enters their doors, with all members on track to graduate from high school with a plan for the future, demonstrating good character and citizenship, and living a healthy lifestyle.
